De Sales Goes Green

St. Francis de Sales is participating in Sunny Delight's "0 Waste Challenge".

Last year the school won 1st Place "Bin It 2 Win It" contest, they will be increasing the challenge for this school year. Students, faculty, and staff will not only continue to recycle, but will now collect and haul their organic waste to a composting site in Loveland thanks to another grant provided by Sunny Delight and facilitated by Keep Cincinnati Beautiful.

The goal is to reduce the waste to landfill by 25% at the end of April. Students will learn how to recycle, what to recycle and how to separate their wastes throughout the day. Be on the look out for more exciting news from the "0 Waste Challenge".

Green Tips for the Week of January 23rd

• Approximately 72% of the waste stream going to landfills is organic, which means it could have been composted.  Make sure you're putting all compostables in the right container.
   
• On average, it costs $30.00 per ton to recyle trash and $50.00 to send it to a landfill.  You do the math, it's cheaper to recycle.
   
• Try packing your lunch in reusable containers instead of plastic bags.  Invest in a lunch box or canvas bag to bring your lunch in.
   
• Enough plastic bottles are thrown away in the United States each year to circle the earth four times.  Reuse your water bottles and when all else fails, put them in the recycling bin!
   
• Recycling creates 1.1 million U.S. jobs, $236 billion in gross annual sales and $37 billion in annual payrolls.
